How Good Is the God We Adore

Joseph Hart
(1712-1768)

How good is the God we adore,
Our faithful, unchangeable Friend,
Whose love is as great as His power,
And knows neither measure nor end!1

’Tis Jesus, the First and the Last,
Whose Spirit shall guide us safe home;
We’ll praise Him for all that is past,
And trust Him for all that’s to come.2

  1. This couplet from the first stanza is quoted by Percy Gutteridge in Our Great Savior God.
  2. These two stanzas are actually the last verse of Hart's hortatory hymn No Prophet or Dreamer of Dreams, an inspired rendering of Deuteronomy 13:1-4 in poetic form.
